The Caritas Ministry – Prayer in Action

Caritas means Charity, Altruistic Love, and Loving Kindness

Unity of Berkeley is forming a new ministry team dedicated to providing assistance to church members during times of illness, surgery, or other serious medical treatments. Our vision is to provide vital non-medical care during such times, such as visiting and reading, transportation to medical appointments, assistance with shopping and household chores, and respite for family caregivers.

If you are interested in learning more about the Caritas Ministry, come to our first meeting on Wednesday, February 10, at 7PM in the Fillmore Room. We will provide an overview of the program and invite you to explore this ministry as a path of spiritual service. Training for the Caritas Ministry will be four Wednesdays, February 3 -24, from 7-8:30PM.

Food Barrel Donations

Every 4th Sunday

Donations for the Food Barrel in the foyer of the Ecumenical Center are accepted any time during operational hours. Unity of Berkeley asks our community to especially focus on food donations the 3rd Sunday of every month. Bring the extras that are filling your cupboards or new food especially purchased and place them in the barrel. Food is distributed via various community groups that do outreach to the less fortunate in our community. Generosity encouraged!

One important volunteer “branch” at Unity of Berkeley is our Facilities Team. Headed up by the amazingly dedicated Steve Carter (pictured), this group handles building and grounds upkeep and improvements. Beautificiation projects completed by the Facilities Team include lush landscaping with California native plants and creation of a Memorial Peace Garden. Beautifying the landscape is a top priority for the team now that we’re in our new church, as well.

Key past and present members of the team are Steve and Catherine Grotenhuis, Dave and Nelline Kowbel, Dick Smith, Katie Whitner, Silvia Garrigo, Tim McGraw, Stephen Grassley, Larry Carr, Joy Curtis, Zara Wallace, Wilma Tichy, and Murray Lamp.

Heartfelt thanks to Steve and all the volunteers who take such good care of our spiritual home.

(Steve Carter’s dedicated service to Unity knows no bounds. In addition to his work as facilities manager, he currently serves as Vice-Chair of our Leadership Team!)
