Celebration of Life for Barbara Dexter ~ Saturday, January 7 ~ 11am

Come and celebrate the life of our dear sister and peace activist on Saturday, January 7 at 11am.

Our Beloved Friend, Barbara made her transition on Friday afternoon, December 23rd. She was at home with her cats, Tux and Jude. Barbara had been cared for and surrounded by her brother Craig and her dear friends for many days prior to her very swift passing. Her cousin Mary from the east coast shared this about her nightly calls to Barbara.

“There’s no question in my mind that Barbara knew her blessings, as I often reminded her that she was surrounded by people caring about her, trying to support her through all that was to come, holding her up as best we could.. There were many times in my working years, when I realized that there are SO many people, who are ALONE…. whether they are surrounded by people, or not… I asked Barbara how many people she could think of, whose cousin would call from clear across the country to do “bed checks” every night! She would laugh, but then turn it to counting her blessings. And, I really feel that she KNEW how to count those blessings, no matter what.”

Food Barrel Donations

Every 4th Sunday

Donations for the Food Barrel in the foyer of the Ecumenical Center are accepted any time during operational hours. Unity of Berkeley asks our community to especially focus on food donations the 3rd Sunday of every month. Bring the extras that are filling your cupboards or new food especially purchased and place them in the barrel. Food is distributed via various community groups that do outreach to the less fortunate in our community. Generosity encouraged!

One important volunteer “branch” at Unity of Berkeley is our Facilities Team. Headed up by the amazingly dedicated Steve Carter (pictured), this group handles building and grounds upkeep and improvements. Beautificiation projects completed by the Facilities Team include lush landscaping with California native plants and creation of a Memorial Peace Garden. Beautifying the landscape is a top priority for the team now that we’re in our new church, as well.

Key past and present members of the team are Steve and Catherine Grotenhuis, Dave and Nelline Kowbel, Dick Smith, Katie Whitmer, Silvia Garrigo, Tim McGraw, Stephen Grassley, Larry Carr, Joy Curtis, Zara Wallace, Wilma Tichy, and Murray Lamp.

Heartfelt thanks to Steve and all the volunteers who take such good care of our spiritual home.
