Sunday Service, October 2 ~ “Making Room for Grace” ~ Rev. Denese Schellink

10:00 meditation 10:30am service
Seeking to calm and expand the mind through spiritual practices allows us not so much to escape our problems but helps us to remember to “disidentify” with them. As I respond to my life situations with compassion and understanding, I am expressing God’s grace. I am allowing the holiness within me to surface and to flow effortlessly from me. From here we can make room for Grace, the sweet embrace of loving presence that fills us with a knowing that no matter what comes or goes in the outer, we are safe and secure in its Unconditional Embrace.
Affirmation: I am gently supported by the grace of God.
Scripture: “From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.” John 1:16

After-Thoughts on BALANCE
Sunday’s Talk, Oct. 10th by Rev. Patricia
Turn your Burdens into Blessings….
I heard from someone after the service that he is planning to transform his burdens into blessings. That will empty out that heavy bucket and send you flying on your teeter tooter in no time! ( You had to be there.. or listen to the audio of my talk.) This is what Unity teaches about all the experiences of our daily life. Everything comes to us in Divine Order, and for our highest good and the best for all concerned. This means that what we might feel is a “burden,” a problem, a challenge, an issue, is part of the divine plan of our lives. We are being called up to a higher consciousness to experience the situation from a different point of view and to bring into spiritual activity our divine capabilities and powers.
I mentioned four ways for create and maintain balance and here they are below.
1. Awareness. Noticing when you are off balance provides the opportunity to retune to your spiritual center. Without this awareness you might spend the whole day grumbling and complaining, judging and reacting, or worrying and fretting and miss out on the richness of life. As soon as you notice your ego, thoughts or emotional reactions have taken charge, choose to center within by bringing all of your attention into the center of your head, the center of your body, the center of your being. A great meditation practice is the Centering Prayer taught by Father Thomas Keating (see below for a short How To.)
2. Neutrality. Judgments and defensive reactions keep us separate from our soul. They are a sign that our ego is in control. Practice viewing situations from a place of neutrality and non-resistance. Buddhist philosophy refers to this as equanimity; a non reactive viewpoint where you see what is happening without getting caught in it. It’s realizing that thoughts, emotions, situations and circumstances come and go, so there is no need to become attached or reactive. This state of being is calm and empowering. Reciting the mantra, “This too shall pass,” will help you to stay neutral.
3. Be Present in the Now. It’s easy to get caught in rehashing the past or rehearsing the future and miss out on the fullness of this present moment. Practice being present with each activity, person, sensation and emotion that comes before you. Try an easy meditation technique such as focusing on your breath, your thoughts or some internal physical sensation for a few minutes as a way to connect to the power of the present moment.
4. Love. When you are feeling full of love, you are spiritually balanced. Life becomes sweeter, lighter and more joyful. Love emanates from the spiritual center within each of us so it is easy to access. Simply focus on what you love about your family, friends, pets, the outdoors, or the God of your heart to ignite this spark within you. Look for the love within others, behind their façade of control, seriousness or grumpinesss, as a way to connect to the soul in each person you encounter. Namaste, The Christ (the Divine) in me greets the Christ (the Divine) in you.

Sundays in January ~ Endless Possibilities
Filed under Past Sunday Talks/Music
2010 is a Year of Endless Possibilities. I invite you to start your new year with us at Unity of Berkeley as we listen and discern what is calling to each of us in this time of opening to and welcoming the new. The White Stone Ceremony is a Unity tradition on the first Sunday of the year, which involves listening to spirit and discovering a quality or name that brings you into your Truth.
Join us the second Sunday of the month to find your personal path by tuning in to your heart’s calling and establishing your intention for endless possibilities in this New Year. Where our attention goes, energy flows.
The Unity Peace Film Project is underway with several filmmakers already in production. On the third Sunday this month, we explore the creative possibilities of this exciting new arm of Unity of Berkeley. How can you create your own peace project, one that is “Personal, Powerful, and Heart-to-Heart”?
At the end of the month we will have two very special guests. Freddie Weber is a one-woman show, with the focus on Eckhart Tolle’s “The Power of Now.” On the final Sunday in January, Patricia’s dear friend Sri Raniji is bringing a very special teacher from India, Poddarji, who lived in the ashram of Sri Aurobindo as a child and is one of the avatars of the Indian art of Vatsu.
I hope you will join us for powerful practices, transformational teachings, and the fellowship of kindred spirits on Sunday mornings in January… and throughout 2010. — Reverend Patricia
