CORE VALUE PROCESS ~ June 12 during Sunday Service

An open letter from the Transition Team to all congregants re:
Paving the way towards selecting our future minister.
May 19, 2011
Greetings to you, dear Unity of Berkeley Community!

By now you have surely heard about Unity of Berkeley’s awesome Transition Team. You’ve even heard (or read) updates about our spiritually affirming process of paving the way towards selection of our next minister.

Well, now is the time for a vital next step: a step that directly involves YOU!

Sunday, June 12th our service will be focused on defining the “Core Values” of our unique spiritual community. Some might ask, “But, aren’t our core values already clear?” Whereas, avowedly we are truly all One with another, each spiritual community also has its own style/flavor/emphasis, determined by the unique combination of its congregants. Yes, by YOU. And so Unity of Berkeley is committed to calling forth the minister who is a match for our unique community. Yes, again. A match for unique YOU!

The guided process we plan to use on Sunday the 12th is engaging, thought-provoking and affirming….in other words, you don’t want to miss it! Moreover, your personal input in this process is INVALUABLE to us at this point in our search. Come take your favorite place in the pews. We’ll guide you through the rest of this truly meaningful process!

A spiritual community is many things to the people it serves. Whether you attend UofB weekly, occasionally, or have been away for quite awhile, we simply ask now for your presence at this defining service. Help us give shape to our evolving Unity of Berkeley.

SUNDAY, JUNE 12th beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Shared, meaningful experience within an enriching spiritual community is guaranteed.
All you provide is: You.
*
In closing, we extend a heart-felt “Thank you!” to all who participated in the Sunday, May 15th meeting after the service. We (your Transition Team) are committed to holding these “monthly chats” in order to maintain open dialogue with our congregation and ensuring that we get back to congregants with candid answers to every question that is brought to our attention. We are committed moreover, to giving you many opportunities to join Leadership as together, in Unity, we creatively delve into each new step of this unfolding process of selecting our new minister. This important process takes time. In taking this next step of identifying Core Values, we are well on our way in this process of paving the way. And so it is!

Yours in community, prosperity, healing and Spirit,
Your Unity of Berkeley Transition Team

Sunday, June 12 ~ Jeanette Monterio

“Who Have You Come Here To Be?”

Meditation @ 10am
Service @ 10:30am

Jeanette brings her Divine Imagination to talk about “Who Have You Come Here To Be?” Ever asked the question Why am I on earth? What is my Divine purpose? What is mine to do? During the service Jeanette will guide us in an interactive process that will help you to understand WHO you have come to earth to be. The process during the service is for ALL who attend – if this is your first time or are a founding member. What we discover during the service will be the beginning of a process when we meet after the service to determine who this church has come to be. Please plan on attending and inviting others who have not been attending to join us as we listen to our soul’s calling. YOUR PRESENCE MAKES A DIFFERENCE to this community and this world!

Deborah Winters will sing her heart to yours finding the place for us all to be!

Community Conversation with the Transition Team

Sunday, April 17, 12:30pm (after service)

As part of the Transition Team’s continued movement towards the growth of ourselves and our community, it has focused on:

Major Theme: HEALING

Learning to embrace conflict
We are working towards embracing and healing conflict within our church as a way to move forward and create a thriving spiritual community:
• We are participating in The I of the Storm Workshop to learn to use conflict to identify what is missing, in ourselves and in our relationship with others:
o We accept the idea that “no one is against us.” We are learning to act not from defensiveness but from the belief that no one means to harm us.
o When a storm does arise, we are learning to return to our wholeness, our God (Good) inside.
Forgiveness Practice -
Since we believe that forgiveness of ourselves and others clears the field for greater abundance, team members are engaged in one of the several options for forgiveness practice, which were presented to us by our Transitional Ministry Specialist, Jeannette Monterio:
• Journaling Exercise – forgiveness exercise;
• Writing out 70 times each day for 7 days, that which we seek to release and let go (forgive); or
• Using the Day by Day Reconciliation Journal.

Major Theme: COMPASSIONATE COMMUNICATION

Since we are committed to encouraging better communication with (and within) the congregation, we have agreed to the following actions:
• We have adopted the principles of Agreeing and Disagreeing in Love.
o As we practice the in action items, we are committed to ending the practice of “Parking Lot” conversations and agreed to speak directly to anyone with whom we have conflict and refrain from behind- the- back conversations.
o We have established several communication opportunities to hear what the congregation wants and needs.
? Tea with the Team after church each Sunday at the transition team table
? Weekly opportunity to speak with members of the team
? Publish minutes of team meetings in the bulletin and online in Topica
? Telephone outreach to members who have not been coming to church
Team members have spent many hours on this project. A Subcommittee report on findings will be submitted at the 4/13 meeting.
As we continue to move forward with our efforts to improve Communication at Unity of Berkeley:
• We are exploring the process of speaking about feelings & needs rather than engaging in “story.” (This is part of compassionate communication)
• We will decide if we will adopt the materials provided from the non-violent communication model (which includes the Feelings and Needs model) and meet with the Board to see how we can incorporate these communication practices into the congregation; and
• We intend to deepen our understanding of Deep Listening, (which is part of the Rhythms in Peace materials, Day 16) and focus our communications with one another on listening for and exploring the underlying (and sometimes not well expressed) feelings, meaning, needs and longing, rather than to evaluate, advise or fix.
